Viking Health Projects Underway
Two construction projects aimed at improving access to health care services for Viking and area residents are now well underway. The first project is the expansion of the Emergency/Outpatient Department at Viking Health Centre, including a new ambulance bay. Now in the design development phase, this project also includes expansion of the rehabilitation and diagnostic services departments and renovation of the surgical recovery room, and the health records and admitting departments.

Capital funding of $5.5 million for the project has been approved by the Alberta Government. The project steering committee completed a public tender process and selected Rockcliff Pierzchaljo Architects and Planners Ltd. of Edmonton for the design and development phase of the work. The architectural firm is consulting with staff user groups and plans to complete the architectural design drawings on the project by this fall. Plans call for a public tender for construction to be issued in January 2007 with construction work to begin by spring 2007.  Completion of construction is anticipated by late spring or early summer 2008.

The second Viking project - a complete renovation of the former Co-op building in downtown Viking into new community offices for the ECH Public Health and Home Care programs - is moving from the planning phase to on-the-ground construction. The majority of funding for this project is being provided by the Alberta Government - Health Sustainability Initiative Fund. East Central Health purchased the building through a generous donation from the Viking Health Foundation. In return, ECH will be providing renovated space in this building for the Viking Mammography Centre for breast cancer screening, which is presently operated by the Foundation in Manus Manor located behind the health centre.

The design work on this project has been carried out by Jack Jamieson Architecture from Edmonton. Construction drawings and contract documents are complete and a public tender for construction was issued recently. Once the winning bid for construction is identified, plans are to begin construction by early summer this year with completion anticipated by the end of 2006.
