Peace River Proud of Dr. Mike Kolber
Peace Country Health and the residents and health professionals of Peace River are proud that their physician, Dr. Mike Kolber, was one of the recipients of the Alberta College of Family Physicians (ACFP) 2004 CARE Awards. And to make the award even more special, Dr. Kolber was one of the first 5 physicians in Alberta to receive the award under the Family Physician category.

"Dr. Kolber is an outstanding doctor, and a real advocate for rural health care, said Dr. Karen Lundgard, who nominated Dr. Kolber for the award. "Mike is the kind of rural doctor that we should all strive to be. He cares about providing the highest quality of medicine to his patients and to our community and he encourages his partners and staff to 'raise the bar' and maintain their knowledge and skills so that our care is the best that it can be."

Dr. Kolber is highly respected and well known for dedicating a great deal of time to teaching medical students and family medicine residents. He goes the extra mile to ensure that they experience rural medicine at its best, and includes them in the social aspects of rural life. He has been involved in planning with Dr. Lundgard, for the Rural Alberta North Residency Program, and is committed to its success. He has organized accommodation for the residents and students and is always looking for ways to improve their experience in Peace River.

Dr. Kolber is committed to maintaining his own continuing medical education and has done his best to include the local medical community. For the past 4 years Dr. Kolber has organized and hosted an annual two day Peace River Medical Conference, which involves residents of the Rural North Program and physicians from Peace River and other northern communities, it has become the educational highlight of the year. He is also involved in research and published Zyban Effects Study. He is currently working on a Rural GI Five Year Analysis, and was invited to Australia last year to present his study at a conference there.

Dr. Kolber is always striving to make the clinic and level of patient care in Peace River the best in the Country and his partners, colleagues and patients recognize his dedication and achievements and the exemplary care that he provides. The ACFP announced the Continuing Professional Achievement Recognition of Excellence (CARE) Awards in the fall of 2004 to recognize and honour members, family medicine residents and medical students who have demonstrated outstanding qualities, contributions, and/or dedication to their patients; community; and/or the profession of family medicine

The Alberta College of Family Physicians (ACFP) values the achievements and professional commitment of its members, and is committed to supporting its members in providing quality patient care through education, research and promotion of best practices.

The ACFP presents up to five (5) CARE awards annually to family physicians practising in Alberta, and four (4) CARE awards to medical students and family medicine residents from the University of Alberta and University of Calgary (one per category for each university).

Dr Mike Kolber shared the award category with Dr. Brad Armstrong - Hinton, Dr. Kathryn Yamashita - Lethbridge, Dr. Guy Lamoureux - Bonnyville, Dr. Heather Armson - Calgary.

Physicians must have made an outstanding contribution and commitment to the profession of family medicine through contributions, leadership and service to the community; to the discipline of family medicine (e.g. teaching medical students in community practice; professional organization involvement; family practice research; caring for their patients, etc.)

Peace Country Health formally congratulates Dr. Kolber on his outstanding achievements and dedication to his profession, which led to receipt of this award. Peace Country Health recognizes the value of its rural physicians and health care professionals to meeting our strategic directions in meeting our mission to provide excellent and compassionate health care that assists and involves the people we serve in meeting their physical, spiritual, mental and environmental health needs at all stages of their lives.
