U of C Faculty of Nursing is continuing collaborations with health care professionals in Alberta, across Canada as well as with nurse researchers in Montana related to rural nursing and rural health.
Rural Health Collaborations As a group we have also attended and presented a poster and papers regarding Maximizing Research Capacity with Student Learners in Rural and Remote Settings, Health concerns voiced by Alberta ranch and farm families, and The Role of Preceptorships in the Education of Health Professionals for Rural and Remote Health Care Delivery at the 16th International Nursing Research Congress, Sigma Theta Tau International, Waikoloa, HI in July, 2005 and the Sixth Conference of the Canadian Rural health Research Society and First Conference of the Canadian Society for Circumpolar Health in Quebec City in October, 2005.
Presentations Made A member of this new national Rural and Remote Nurses Group attended the International Council of Nurses 23rd Quadrennial Congress May 2005 in Taipei, Taiwan and presented an overview of the development of the a national association for rural and remote nurses and also gave a concurrent session at the Western Nurse Leaders Conference in Edmonton, Alberta in November 2005 on "Creation of a national organization for rural and remote nurses in Canada - how a possibility became a reality."
Contributions to Textbooks Members of this group members made contributions to several chapters in H.J. Lee and C. A. Winters (Eds.), Rural Nursing: Concepts, Theory and Practice (2nd ed.) New/ York//: Springer.
Liaison with Rural Physician Group Members of the Rural Group continue to liaise with The Alberta Rural Physician Action Plan regarding the education of rural physicians and nurses and a member also sits on the Associate Deans Advisory Council with Dr. Doug Myhre, the Associate Dean Rural and Regional Affairs, Faculty of Medicine, University of Calgary regarding rural clinical placements for physician and nursing education.
Mentoring Graduate Students One member of the Group is a mentor and supervisor to several graduate students within the Faculty of Nursing who are studying topics that are directly or indirectly connected to rural and remote health across the county. In addition to this, members of the Group remain committed to and involved directly in rural clinical practice in rural locales within Southern Alberta.
